Hello there. My name is David Austin Thompson. I have 10+ years of film industry experience and currently work remotely for various media and commercial clients all across the U.S while living in East Tennessee. The Weekly Workflow was made as a means to share not just my personal story, but also all of the successes and failures that led to me where I am at today.
Whether you’re here to learn about a new trick on managing your workflow in Davinci Resolve, or if you’re looking to begin a career in remote post production from scratch, I am happy to share what I’ve learned so others can benefit.
My roots begin in the Ojai Valley, CA. During my time working in the film industry in and around Los Angeles, I called the town of Ojai home for many years.
I have worked on a wide variety of content while wearing a variety of “hats” in the film industry (Visual Effects Artist, Film Editor, VFX Editor, Assistant Editor, Dailies Operator, Colorist)
Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work on Marvel films (Black Panter, Venom 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp), Music Videos (Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Travis Scott) and multiple Independent Features/Documentaries, to name a few. My IMDb page is here
After writing, producing and directing my short film “Long Distance” in 2019 (Link) and my feature film,“OJAI” in 2020 (Link), I began taking on multiple remote post-production jobs, and soon realized that I could work for Hollywood and my freelance clients while living literally anywhere in the country.
So, I chose Tennessee. I relocated to the foothills of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains in Johnson City, TN. The move not only brought me closer to my old East Coast friends, family and past industry connections, but it allowed me to finally escape the Los Angeles industry bubble, my hometown, and share my expertise with an even greater clientele.
Believe it or not, since moving to Tennessee, not only do I have more local video and film work than ever before, but my remote post production clientele also grew exponentially. I currently work for multiple Los Angeles based clients and post production companies under a few different roles working on content for clients like T-Mobile, Microsoft, LinkedIn and more.
In this blog, The Weekly Workflow, I want to share what I’ve learned since the beginning of my career. For those looking to leave a big metropolitan area like Los Angeles behind - I think it’s important for you to be able to see how someone like me made it happen, while not just retaining the same amount of business as before, but actually exponentially growing that business as soon as I made the switch!
